# Find Momentum Plays

> How to screen for momentum and technical setups in Driven: relative strength, breakouts, and volume, combined with fundamentals to avoid chasing weak names.

This guide covers screening for momentum, finding stocks with strong price action and technical setups. Momentum screening surfaces names that are moving; combining it with a fundamental check keeps you from chasing names that are moving for no good reason.

The Skill behind this workflow is [Stock Screener](/skills/stock-screener).

## When to use this

* Looking for stocks with strong relative strength
* Finding technical breakouts or setups
* Spotting names with unusual volume or accelerating moves
* Adding a momentum overlay to a fundamental shortlist

## Step 1: Screen for the technical setup

```text theme={null}
Find [market] stocks with strong relative strength, trading near [setup, e.g. 52-week highs], with above-average volume. Show the technical context for each.
```

Example:

```text theme={null}
Find US stocks breaking out to new highs with strong relative strength and rising volume over the past month.
```

## Step 2: Add a fundamental filter

This is what separates a momentum strategy from chasing. Layer in quality:

```text theme={null}
From that list, keep only the names that also have improving fundamentals, positive revenue growth, and reasonable balance sheets.
```

A stock with strong momentum and improving fundamentals is a very different proposition from one with momentum alone.

## Step 3: Check the positioning

```text theme={null}
For the top names, what's the capital flow picture? Are institutions accumulating, or is this a retail-driven move?
```

For A-shares, this draws on Driven's flow data, including Dragon & Tiger lists and institutional-versus-retail flow.

## Step 4: Define your risk

Momentum cuts both ways. Before acting:

```text theme={null}
For [name], where's the technical level that would invalidate the setup, and what's the risk if the momentum reverses?
```

## Common mistakes

* **Chasing momentum with no fundamentals.** Price strength alone is fragile. Always add a quality check.
* **Ignoring volume.** A move on thin volume is less reliable than one confirmed by participation.
* **No exit plan.** Momentum trades need a defined invalidation level. Set it before you enter.

## Prompt variations

```text theme={null}
Find [market] stocks that just had a volume spike with a positive catalyst.
```

```text theme={null}
Screen for names with improving momentum off a base, not extended ones that have already run.
```
